Reflection of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I have read about the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in ESL class. It was really interesting and impressive. I would like to recommend this book to the readers who enjoy to read the fantasy story.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" Charlie was the only one child who left in the factory until every children had gone. There was a child whose name is Charlie. He is living with poor family. They didn't have enough food to eat so they were always struggling. Near his house, there was a huge chocolate factory. One day, the owner of chocolate factory invited five children to look around his giant chocolate factory. Charlie was the last child who found the golden ticket inside the chocolate. However, every child except Charlie was really repulsive and disgusting. They never listened Mr Wonka’s announcement. Unfortunately, four children had disappeared. Charlie, who left the end of the journey of the chocolate factory, finally was willed the Chocolate Factory by Mr Wonka.

There are a few characters that I would like to explain about. Mr Wonka is the owner of the chocolate factory. He is really odd and extraordinary. He can invent any kind of chocolate that he wants to make. Augustus is a boy who is very obese. He loves to eat chocolate bars so he eats about 20 chocolate bars a day. Veruca is a girl who is spoiled by her parents. Her parents get something to her whatever she wants. She always misunderstands that she can get everything from her parents that she needs. Violet is a great gum chewer. She always chews a gum while she is sleeping. She is very stubborn so she doesn’t obey someone’s rule. Mike is extremely crazy at TV and games. He is very violent. Last character is Charlie. Charlie is very kind and honest. He respects elders and he is very patient.

From Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, willing Mr Wonka’s factory to Charlie was my favorite part. This is because while other children got punished, Charlie was obedient and patient. At first, I was concerned if Charlie wouldn’t get any prize from Mr Wonka. When Charlie was awarded and got chocolate factory, I was thankful for Mr Wonka even I was not Charlie.

However, I don’t like ending part. All children except Charlie were punished but they couldn’t become normal children. I hoped that all the children can be normal even they have done something wrong.

I am so glade to read this interesting book. I hope I can read another fantasy book which is written by Roald Dahl.

Reflection of retelling myth

In ESL class, I have to retell my myth story through the point of view of the character. I am going to retell 'Eros and Psyche' story and my point of view of the character is Eros. The SLR that my project best reflects is Thinking Creatively. When I write this piece of writing, I had to think creatively because I changed my point of view into Eros so I should create some stories. If the point of view of the character is changed, the story is totally different. I added new story creatively. I also searched on the internet so I got information from there. I wanted the story would be creative.

When I wrote this piece of writing, I was proud of it, because I was so enthusiastic when I created this piece of writing. I was trying my best to write this piece. I think I have done well. I think my point of view of character is supported well throughout the text.

However, I have to focus on my grammar such as verbs and word choice. Especially my word choice is little bit weak, so I have to memorize more high level vocabularies. I also should organize some paragraphs because sometimes the sentences are flowing and don’t be connected smoothly. Those are my weakness part of my writing skill.

The most challenging aspect of this assignment was grammar and word choice. It was difficult to choose the correct word. So I kept searching on dictionary and thesaurus. Those dictionaries were very informative and useful. I could know many words from there.

From this assignment, I have learned how to organize each paragraph. If I write next assignment, I can make the writing more clearly and informatively.

Why do we write??

Writing is very important to our lives. Because it remains for us forever unless it isn't burnt or ripped. Diary is very good example. I have been recording about my life on diary since I was six years old. I drew the picture also. It is still remaining in my mind. Sometimes, I read those diaries. Those are quite simple but very funny. I can memorize my childhood. When I was young, I used to live with my grandparent because my parent were going to work. My grandparent were very polite and kind to me. Even though, the year had passed, I can be memorized by reading diary. It was very beautiful. Otherwise, writing is important when I am hard to talk over the phone or conversation. If I want to complain or pleasure to whom, I always write letter to them. It is easy to communicate. Also, we can improve English skill from writing especially me. From now on, I will try to write with different topics and improve my writing skill.

My SLR Progress Today

1. SLR doing well in ESL
I would like to tell something that I am doing very well in ESL. That is Think Creatively, because whenever I was doing project, I tried to make it creatively. Especially, we had to include a lot of images on blog which were matching with the writing piece. I tried to upload creative images when I searched the pictures on the internet. Also, I am interested in drawing so when we were doing drawing activity, I thought about how I could make this drawing very creatively or what stuff that I could use to make this project creatively. I have improved my thinking skill from those activities.

2. SLR need to improve
Yet, I have much that I need to improve on. One of them is Collaborate Constructively. Recently, we had a lot of group activities in ESL. However, I wanted to make the group that the members were friendly with me. I avoided making the group with boys. Sometimes, I thought the boys make me annoying but that was my prejudice. They were helpful and useful to me. They gave creative ideas while we were doing activity. Therefore, I will collaborate constructively with all classmates.

Wordle on Pandora

This story is about Pandora who was made by Hephaestus. I chose the word 'Pandora' is the biggest word because Pandora is the main character of this story. Next, there are Hephaestus and Zeus. He created the Pandora after receiving Zeus' order. Zeus had the punishment to the human, because human used the fire without his permission. He was very upset. Also, 'curiosity' is big, because from Pandora's curiosity, every evils were come out. And I chose 'disaster' and 'beautiful' into small word because they are not very important. I choose the 'hopeless, hope and despair' are big size words because the end of the story, Pandora opened the box and every evils were come out: despair. Then she shut the cover of the box. Therefore, the evil which symbol is 'Hopeless', was arrested by Pandora. That's why although the person failed something, still we have hope so we can do again.

Book Report Reflection

In 1st trimester, I read a book called 'The Witches' which was written by Roald Dahl. This book was the funniest book that I have read before. Also I prefer fantasy book rather than the other genre book. I thought this book was very difficult and unmatchable to me at first. I was nervous with it. However, I realized that it had a lot of fantastic vocabulary and the story was extremely fun. Of course, it was easy for me!! I could know a lot of information about witches (I am not sure it was true) and also, I learned useful words from this book.

After read 'The Witches', I did 'Book Jacket' project. This activity was about making the cover of my book. Because the real cover of the book was quite boring. I wanted to create new book jacket. Back of the book, I wrote interesting summery. I drew a mouse which is very essential character in book and I drew the witch which is frustrated by the mouse. I wanted to show the mouse that is the main character in the story and the witches. They have their own interesting position. I think it is very creative.

I think I did well on presenting. I tried to demonstrate my project in front of my classmates confidently. I always practiced in front of my parents and I was advised by my parents and sister. For example, eye contact, clear and loud voice and etc. While presenting my project, I was nervous but I tried my best. However, I want to improve on speaking. We have to say the sentence smoothly, but I was not really. Sometimes, my sentences were mistaken. Next time, I will practice harder and I will show my work perfectly.

For SLR, I did well on learning enthusiastically. For my presentation, I was really enthusiasm. I was really working hard and wanted to show useful presentation to my friends and teacher. I am pretty sure I was enthusiasm. Also I learned other thing to do presentation. For my next book report, I will do more creatively and enthusiastically.

If I choose next book for the presentation, I will choose either mystery or fantasy book. I have a lot of curiosity so I want to read the mystery or fantasy book. It will be very interesting and unforgettable to me. I can't wait next book report project!!!

My memories

Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose. ~From the television show The Wonder Years

Can you memorize any information easily? Do you have any important memories? May be, everyone has their essential memories in their brains. Something sad or happy, something good or bad. I have a lot of memories in my brain. Those are very important so I cannot forget them.

I would like to talk about my important memory which makes me cry. The sad novel makes me cry. Those are korean books. Especially, the book 'On se mi ro' is the saddest book to me. I have a funny story about that book. When I was living in Korea, I used to go to school too. I was reading 'On se mi ro'. At first, I didn't know how much sad was that. I read the book during the class. It was extremely sad. During the class, I cried about 10 minutes. My friends and teacher asked that what had happened to me. I was embarrassed. But my tear was still falling down on my cheek. There was the another novel which makes me sad also. Whenever I read those books, I cry during the reading time. One day, I read the book with my friend in the bus. Foolishly, my friend and I cried together. At that moment we were just crying even everyone was staring us. Now, my mother scolds me not to read thoes sad novels, because I waste a lot of time to read those books. Also, I knew those books are neither useful nor knowledgeable. Still, I cannot forget that ridiculous happening.

My second memory is something long time ago. Since I was five years old, I used to go to Jeju Island every year. Jeju is very beautiful Island which is situated south of Korea. My family liked to go to Jeju Island with other family because there were a lot of good activities that I could do. We could feel smell of natural and there were a lot of museums which were very valuable. I learned many speices of marine lives. My trip that I had gone to Jeju Island was very eligible to me.
Owning our memories are good for us. We can remain the funny or scary incident and they will make me happy. They are all valuable. Everyone, 'Keep your ESSENTIAL memory in your brain!!!'

The boy whose name is Kileken, introduced himself he is an orphan. The old man was so excited because he had a companion. They spent time together. Next morning, when the old man woke up, the boy had already prepared all the breakfast for the old man. The man was curious about the boy's behavior. How could the boy do all the morning chores before the sun came out? How? Also, he took the water from the spring(place) in a day. The old man asked how you could do all those works. The boy just said to trust him. Despite of his saying, he was curious. He decided to find out the boy's secret. At the break of dawn, the old man pretended to be sleep. At that time, the boy went to the waist-high grass and looked around cautiously. The old man followed. Suddenly, the boy raised his arms. Instantly the sun dimmed as a powerful glow spread down the boy's arms and through his body. And the boy turned around and found the old man hiding behind the tree. The boy had gone.
That night, one of the stars appeared which was missing. However, it neither flickered nor twinkled. The star is ther planet Venus. The Maasai call it Kileken, the orphan boy.

My Name

In ISKL, everyone calls me MIchelle Ahn. Actually my korean name is 'Ahn Ji Hyun'. It was named from my grandfather. In Korea, there is very important tradition. Most of the Korean receives their name by using a Chinese character. In each letters, they have meaning. Even the prociation is the same, they have different meaning. My name is 安 知 玹(Ahn Ji Hyun) ‘Ahn’ means ‘calm and comfortable’. ‘Ji’ means ‘has a lot of knowledge’. ‘Hyun’ means ‘precious and valuable’.
In Korea, giving the name is very essential thing in our life. Most of the people believe that the name can change their destiny. We have a place that gives the good name to us. My grandfather named my name when I was young. My mother said that my grandfather had tried to make a valuable name to me. Also, my grandfather went to that place and brought three different names to me. At that time, there was a fabulous and smart anchor woman whose name is Ji Hyun. On my name lists, there was Ji Hyun too. Accordingly, my father and grandfather chose Ji Hyun and gave it to me. Now, I am satisfied about my name.
I have an advantage in my name. When I was young, I met a friend whose name was same as me. I could make a good friendship with her and everyone said that we looked like twins. I was so happy. On the other hand, I have a disadvantage. In my school, there is one student whose name is same as me. Sometimes, her message was sent to me and my message was sent to her. However, everyone said that my name is familiar.
I have been teased by my classmate. There is Korean word start with ‘Ahn’ so they used to call by using those words. Sometimes, they emphasized my name strangely. Despite of their teasing I always think the meaning of my name.
Everyone said my name is very familiar and comfortable. As my name's meaning is comfortable and calm I want to be a same person.

My goals

"All of life is a journey which paths we take, what we look back on, and what we look forward to is up to us. We determine our destination, what kind of road we will take to get there, and how happy we are when we get there." -Anonymous

My three goals that I have for myself in school are reading a book every two weeks, getting out from ESL until end of the trimester 3 and participating sport activity. I think reading a book is very important and eligible work to everyone. I shall make a plan for reading a book every night. I promise that I shall read the book over 8 pages. If my reading is improved, I will read a book every one week. And I want to get out from ESL as quickly as I can. I will try to achieve this goal by trimester 3. Every day, I am going to memorize vocabulary and try to write an essay with different topics. I will do my homework as good as I can. Last goal is participating sport activity. I like to do sports but yet, I didn't chose about sport activity. I had chosen only music activity. I think it isn't good idea. Because participating for every thing is very good experience for me. I will try my best to reach my goals!

And here is my other three goals that I have for myself outside of school! Those are going to a good university, swim quickly as possible as I can and going to USA again. Recently, I want to go to a good university. I think this is very essential thing in my life. Going to a good university is also connected with study. I will study hard every part of the subject especially, my favorite sucject. Next goal is swimming quickly. I think this is the easiest goal. I will practice every day if I have a free time. Last goal is going to USA again. In Korea, few of my friends are preparing action to participate contest. They said that they would give me an opportunity to participate that contest. I have decided to learn English harder!!!

What a nice spring break!

What a nice spring break!

Michelle
April 26, 2009

Spring break was really enjoyable and exciting. Although it was short, it was one of the best breaks in my life. I could rest pretty well during this break.

On the eve of the holiday, when the bell rang, I rushed home as quickly as I could. I wanted to finish all my homework quickly because my aunt and grandmother were coming to visit us in Malaysia. Before they arrived, my parents and I discussed plans to take them around Malaysia. We wanted to make their stay, as enjoyable as possible. I couldn’t control my feelings. (The plan was just wonderful!!!) After discussing the plans, we went to the airport to fetch my grandmother. We were so happy and excited to see her. (Grandmother is getting shorter than me.) Then, we went to the airport to meet my aunt and her family. They came from East Timor. However we lost our way and wandered around the highway. Finally, we found the airport and returned home with my grandmother and aunt’s family.

My aunt told us that East Timor is very hot and it is a backward country, not as developed as Malaysia. There are not any Korean grocery shops or Korean restaurants. I really feel sorry for my aunt because she is not able to buy delicious Korean dishes. Imagine if we did not have any Korean shop or restaurants. NO!!! However the coffee from East Timor is very popular. Aunt brought many packets of coffee for us. The next morning we all had coffee for breakfast. It tasted pretty good. Until today we are still drinking that coffee.

Also, my aunt has one daughter. Her name is Yun Sol, but we call her ‘Sol’. She is very cute!!! She is only two years old but very talkative. She is such a lovely girl. BUT!!! When I saw her long messy hair, I thought she was a jungle girl! She looked so much better after cutting her hair that afternoon.

On Monday, we all woke up at the break of dawn, got dressed and left for Genting Highlands in two cars. Hurrah! This place is a mountain resort and there are a few interesting activities for children and a casino for adults. Unfortunately when we arrived at Avana (Gate of Genting Highlands), the cable cars were not working. As a result, we had to drive up the mountain. It was steep and we were all very tense.

In no time we were at the top. What a great mountain resort! I haven’t seen resort like this before. The place was misty and the clouds were so low. It was a very striking scene. By midday we were so hungry. We went to Pizza Hut and ate pizza. It was so salty. (But I think it was better than the pizza in Kota Kinabalu.) Then we rode on some roller coasters. It was so thrilling. My cousin doesn’t know fear because she is still young. When we saw a man sitting with a huge snake, she ran to him and touch the snake. Even she grabbed its head!!! OH MY GOD!!! I was so scared. Anyway, we enjoyed the whole day in Genting Highlands and we came home feeling dead tired. We kicked off out shoes and slept immediately.

The next few days were spent shopping. It is a normal thing in my life, but my aunt needed to do some shopping. We went to KLCC, Mega Mall and Tesco. My grandmother took care of my younger sister and cousin at home so my mother and aunt could to their shopping calmly. On the last day we all stayed at home and talked. After a long time, we had gathered as a whole family. We had so much to talk about. I missed my grandfather and my other uncle who couldn’t come to Malaysia. Grandmother cooked some delicious Korean dishes that day. After dinner we went to the airport to send grandmother, aunt and her family. Saying goodbye was really sad.

We had a great time during the spring break. I will remember this wonderful spring break for a long time. Bye spring break!!!
